Earrings - Drill Collar Queen Earrings

In drillling for oil and gas during the early exploration days of the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico they would use a hollow core drill bit to drill and pull large portions of the rock to the surface.  These bits would be any where from 2 inch diameter to 5 or 6 inch in diameter. Now days with the cost of drilling and new technology, they seldom core a well making the core sample valuable as it is turned into jewelry and Desk top gifts.

 

These earrings come from the Queen formation which is very shallow compared to say a Devonion formation well almost 4 miles below the surface of the earth. Queen Formation - depth 2,000 feet, 200 million years old.
